Update from the May 2016 lunch and plans for future lunches.
Hi Guys,

Here is a quick update on our impromptu lunch at the Aberfoyle Inn on May 26/16.

We had 11 classmates attend which by our estimation is about 25% of our remaining class now that four of guys have passed. The following people enjoyed the lunch and getting caught up since some of us have not talked since Graduation: Doug Deeth, Gerry Garber, Dave Harris, Oiva Laine, Miles Lauzon, Tom Little, Ross MacDonald, Frank Papp, Ken Rossel, Vic Shantora and Paul Webert. Beers (and some wine) were consumed so it did remind of us of old times when we had our “Cultural Parties” at school. Anyone still remember Paula? Who still has items of her clothing – she wants them back!!

Even with all the banter we did manage to complete a couple of pieces of business which was to arrange more get togethers.

Reunion

Our Chem Eng 70 Reunion will be held on the weekend of September 9/10, in the fall of 2017. Please put these dates in your calendar and plan on attending as well as talking to other classmates and encouraging them to join us.

The itinerary and venue are open to discussion and input so if you have some thoughts about what you would like to do and where, please send us an email. So far, one suggestion is to hold an event at a winery in the Niagara area.

Lunches

Even though we had an amazing turnout for our impromptu lunch, it was suggested that we schedule a couple of lunches at fixed dates so that people could better plan to take part. To that end we have picked Wednesday, October 26, 2016 and April 26, 2017. Our thinking is to avoid winter driving and also the busier times of the year. Once again, please put these dates in your calendar and plan to join in. The exact location for the lunch will be chosen closer the time and once we know who is coming.

Tidbits of info from the impromptu lunch.

Miles and Linda sold their house recently to opt for condo living.

Oiva built himself a retirement home just outside Welland.

Ross just got back from China.

Doug Deeth was the only one in the crowd that is still working – so we all agreed that that was good because we needed someone to keep the economy rolling to support us retired folks. The joke is: ‘old lawyers never stop working, they just lose their appeal’...

Gerry still craves playing tennis (a bit slower than he used to).

Frank Papp retired at the end of December and spent part of the winter in Florida and The Bahamas.

A few years ago, Dave & Jan Harris spent part of the ‘Arab spring’ checking out the pyramids in Egypt. He said it was nice and quiet down there at that time – no tourists getting in the way of good sightseeing opportunities.

Found out that Ken Rossel is a guitar picker (old country music).

Tom Little’s fav pastime continues to be golf (in between international travel events).

Paul Webert and his wife moved from Hamilton to Port Perry to be near her parents which have since passed and now the question is whether to move back to the Hamilton/Ancaster area to be near grandkids (decisions, decisions).
Vic is still playing in a rock ‘n roll band with Al Soligo (who unfortunately could not attend our lunch because he was teaching Italian to a class of seniors.)

Glen Weston could not join us because he was in the middle of rebuilding a chimney at his cottage and Bob Taylor’s reason was because he was on river cruise in France. I guess we will accept these justifications this time but hopefully now that we have fixed dates, people can plan around other events and attend the lunches.

That is about all we can recall but if someone else would like to send along some comments, please do so.

Take care…

Vic & Tom

P.S. Glenn Weston mentioned to me that on his and Rudy’s visit to the Pyramids, the strangest thing that they saw was when facing the same direction as the sphinx, the sphinx overlooks a Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet and a picture of Colonel Sanders - talk about a clash of ancient vs modern cultures!!

On May 26, Tom Boughner reminded me that it was on that day 46 years ago that we had our Grad Ceremony – time flies…
